It’s no secret that career success often depends on the quality of the relationships you develop with your managers and co-workers. Although office personalities vary considerably, there are certain rules that always apply because we are all human. Here are 9 to keep in mind as you strive to lead, influence, and collaborate with people at work.





1. We always want more

As human beings, we are usually not comfortable with our current level of achievement. Once we attain success in some fashion, we scarcely take the time to celebrate before moving on to the next big thing. And when it comes to job satisfaction, we want what we don’t have. For example, employees in big business want to become free-spirited entrepreneurs, while many entrepreneurs wish for the security of a full-time job. Give us the freedom to try other things so we see why our situation is so great.

2. Everyone wants to feel valued

We want to feel like we are making a contribution to the organization, that our work is making the world a better place. Even if the job is to put the wrappers on chewing gum, we need to understand the big picture and why our role is critical to the company’s success. Tell us.

3. People want to talk about themselves

Human beings are self-absorbed by nature, so when you encourage us to tell you about our family, our hobbies, and our pet projects, we feel closer to you. If you want to build strong relationships, remember birthdays and children’s names.

4. People want to be part of a group

We are a social species, and we want to fit it at all costs. We may even sacrifice our own ideals for this privilege, hence what is known as mob mentality. Gain broad support for your projects by rallying colleagues to your side.

5. We might want to help you, but we still want something in return

Most humans do genuinely want to assist others, but the part of us that looks after #1 first is alive and well. If we’re being honest, most of us will admit that when we do someone a favor, we expect to reap the benefits at some point in the future. Try to do your share even if no one is asking.

6. We want to take action

Although human beings are not huge fans of change, we’re also not content with the status quo. If things are too peaceful, we get bored and want to shake things up a little, and in times of uncertainty, we want to do something – anything – to bring about a resolution. Be wary of knee-jerk reactions.

7. Once a decision is made, it’s made

We humans tend to hold hard and fast to our decisions, even if they’re turning out to be the wrong ones. This is primarily due to cognitive dissonance, or the feeling of discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs. If you want someone to change their mind, start persuading before they have too much invested.

8. We believe the worst won’t happen

This belief is the reason we still haven’t protected ourselves against the future flood that will wipe out downtown Manhattan. Despite what the scientists say, we refuse to come to terms with the inevitable. But while we’re thinking that other people get fatal diseases and go bankrupt, someone in the organization should be planning for the worst-case scenario.

9. We make the same mistakes over and over

Human beings don’t learn from the lessons of the past, and we like to blame others for our misfortunes instead of taking a hard look inward and sharing responsibility for negative outcomes. Don’t fall into this trap. Life circumstances change all the time, but you take yourself with you.

He as the Sixth Sikh Guru humbled himself and even went to the Gwalior jail. Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor, sent him to the jail. The First Sikh Guru Nanak obeyed when Baber, the Mughal Emperor sent him to jail. Similarly, the Fifth Guru Shri Guru Arjan did as he sacrificed his life in the jail. He was martyred by the Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor


7. He wanted to ensure equal rights to all kings in India. When he was released from the Gwalior jail, he asked Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor to release all 52 kings in the jail. It is called the Bandi Chhor Divas, the Liberation Day for Prisoners. The Sikhs celebrate it every year on Diwali. The Diwali is a festival in India. It is the festival of lights

8. He constructed the forts for defense and security. These forts were for spiritual practice of martial arts


9. He founded a city named Kiratpur Sahib. The Sikhs perform the last ceremony as a ritual at this place after a Sikh dies. Many Hindus perform this ritual at the Ganges, Haridwara

10. He invented a musical instrument. It has a name Taus meaning peacock

The Value of Encouragement by Phil Evans

We are lucky enough to live opposite a magnificent sporting complex (3 soccer fields and a cricket pitch); so we get entertained all year round with the presence of people of all ages playing to win! The most passion shown is when the kids are playing!

The other day I experienced a soccer coach working with his young teenage team just prior to them playing a match.

What a great time I had listening to his words of praise and encouragement as I walked just near them as I wandered home from one of my daily strolls beside our beautiful lake.

His words were so uplifting and supportive to this group of keen young sportsmen! They were about to go onto the field, and do their best to win their game, which they train so hard for every week.

After I got home I sat and observed his actions with the young guys just before they ran on to begin play. I couldn't hear his words now as I was inside our home and telling Sue what I had heard him saying; but I could distinctly see his supportive actions and energy as he spoke to every player individually. Pats on the back; hand shakes; high-fives; encouragement plus! Pure magic!

Every one of them lit up with enthusiasm and eagerness to do their best for him, for themselves, and for the team!

The coach of the other team was displaying the exact opposite behavior; he was yelling abuse and criticism 'at' his young players the whole time; and displayed an arrogant argumentative attitude towards the opposition team and the umpire for the entire game.

Yes - the team who received the nurturing and encouragement did win the game! And...they celebrated accordingly with their singing, dancing, and excited cheering!

The other team walked off the field with their heads hung down in disappointment.

The people in our lives; those people who we spend time and conversation with; are also experiencing either encouragement or criticism from us and others.

They also will be feeling those winning or losing emotions; just as we do from others in our lives!

It is important for us all to be aware of what we are 'putting out there' when dealing with family, friends, and work mates.

Yes, I do understand that "What other people do or say is their stuff; and how we react (or not) is our stuff"; however - this message today is about promoting the use of encouraging words and actions as often as possible.

Encouragement: We all need to hear it; see it; and feel it!

Best way for each of us to have that experience is to give it out freely; and it will come back freely!

How Parents Can Provide More Structure for Teens

There are some things that parents can do to both provide more structure for teens and monitor their behavior with an increased level of confidence.


Know your teen’s friends – Parents should know all your teen’s friends, as well as their families, if possible.

Know where your teen is at all times – It should be mandatory that your teen keep you informed of where he or she will be at all times. Don’t settle for a vague, “I’ll be hanging out with my friends.” That’s not specific, and won’t help you locate your teen should you need to or if there’s a panic call for help. Require your teen to give you specific details, including who they’ll be with, where they’re going, what they’ll be doing, if there’ll be responsible adults in attendance, and when they’ll be home. If they can’t or won’t provide the details, don’t allow your teen to go.

Educate teens on distracted driving – Although the dangers of texting and cell phone use while driving are becoming more well-known, and many states have or are enacting laws prohibiting such behavior, make sure your teen knows the dangers of distracted driving. The obsession of teens to be constantly in touch with their friends by texting, especially, is something that parents need to nip in the bud. If parents see their teens repeatedly violating the law by texting and/or using cell phones while driving, either take away the cell phone or restrict driving privileges – or both.

Limit Internet use – Establish rules that teens need to abide by for limiting Internet use when parents aren’t home. Educate teens on the dangers of unsafe use of the Internet, and know what your teens are doing when they’re online.

Encourage an after-school job for your teen – To keep teens busy and out of trouble in the all-important hours of 3 to 6 p.m. when millions of American teens are left unsupervised, encourage your teen to get an after-school job. In the summer, a part-time job can be even more important, since there are many long hours while parents are away at work that teens can wind up doing things that can land them in trouble.
